Installation and Maintenance Instructions for Wedge-Latch® Coupler
Specifications:
- Rated according to SAE J684.
- Minimum tongue overlap: 6.5 inches.
- For use only with 50° trailer tongues.
Tools Required:
- Torque wrench
- SAE 30 wt. motor oil
- Grade 5 bolts with locknuts
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Weld-On Instructions:
- Ensure all welding is performed by an AWS-certified welder.
- Butt the coupler’s internal stop against the end of the trailer tongue for maximum overlap (minimum 6.5 inches).
- Weld both sides and the top using a minimum 3/16" fillet weld.
- Remove any excess paint or primer from the ball pocket and latching mechanism after installation.
Bolt-On Instructions:
- A-Frame Couplers:
- Butt the coupler’s internal stop against the trailer tongue for maximum overlap.
- Use the available mounting holes to secure the coupler with Grade 5 bolts with locknuts.
- Torque bolts to SAE proof load specifications:
- Ø 3/8”: 23 ft-lbs.
- Ø 1/2”: 55 ft-lbs.
- Ø 5/8”: 110 ft-lbs.
- Flat-Mount Couplers:
- Insert four (4) 5/8” Grade 5 bolts through the coupler and mounting plate.
- Tighten bolts to 150 ft-lbs.
- Adjustable Height Channels:
- For tongues 6 inches or less, gussets are required.
- Weld a 1/4” minimum fillet weld around the mounting bracket.
- Use (2) 5/8” x 5” Grade 5 bolts to secure the coupler to the bracket. Tighten to 100-110 ft-lbs.
Coupling Instructions:
To Couple:
- Block the trailer wheels.
- Align the hitch ball beneath the coupler.
- Open the coupler locking lever and lower the coupler onto the ball until it is fully seated.
- Close the locking lever, ensuring the latch engages and the ball clamp is beneath the ball.
- Optionally, insert a 5/16” pin or lock through the lever.
To Uncouple:
- Block the trailer wheels.
- Fully open the locking lever and raise the coupler off the hitch ball.
- Return the handle to the closed position.
Maintenance:
- Perform annually:
- Check welds and bolt torque.
- Grease the ball pocket.
- Oil pivot points with SAE 30 wt. motor oil.
- Inspect retaining pins and replace if necessary.
- Keep the ball pocket clean to prevent dirt buildup.
Safety Notes:
- Always use the correct hitch ball size as specified on the coupler.
- Inspect all components before each use and replace any worn or damaged parts.
- Do not tow if the ball is not fully seated or the coupler latch is not engaged.
- Ensure trailer safety chains and lighting meet SAE J684 standards.
