Installation Instructions for Collar-Lok™ Couplers
Part Numbers:
- Refer to the coupler body for specific part numbers.
Specifications:
- Rated according to SAE J684.
- Minimum tongue overlaps:
- Models 2B, 4B, 5B: 8.5 inches.
- Model 3B: 6.5 inches.
- Other applications: 7 inches.
- Torque specifications:
- Ø 3/8”: 23 ft-lbs.
- Ø 1/2”: 55 ft-lbs.
- Ø 5/8”: 110 ft-lbs.
Tools Required:
- Torque wrench
- Grade 5 bolts with locknuts
- SAE 30 wt. motor oil
- Grease for ball pocket
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Weld-On Installation:
- Ensure all welding is performed by a certified welder.
- Align the coupler's internal stop against the end of the trailer tongue for maximum overlap.
- Weld a 3/16” bead around the coupler and tongue interface. Avoid undercutting or washing out during welding.
Bolt-On Installation:
- Align the coupler internal stop with the trailer tongue's end for maximum overlap.
- Secure the coupler using Grade 5 bolts with locknuts, torqued to the specified values (see Specifications).
- Verify that there is no deformation of the trailer tongue end.
- Confirm the required number and size of fasteners specified by the trailer manufacturer.
Coupling Instructions:
- Block the trailer wheels.
- Align the hitch ball beneath the coupler.
- Open the coupler by removing the pin and sliding the collar away from the ball pocket.
- Lower the trailer onto the hitch ball, ensuring it is fully seated.
- Close the coupler cap, allowing the collar to capture the cap.
- Reinsert the pin behind the collar.
- Secure the safety chains to the towing vehicle as per SAE J684.
Uncoupling Instructions:
- Block the trailer wheels.
- Remove the pin and slide the collar away from the ball pocket to open the coupler.
- Raise the trailer from the hitch ball.
Maintenance Instructions:
- Perform these tasks at least annually:
- Check welds and mounting bolt torque.
- Grease the ball pocket.
- Oil pivot points with SAE 30 wt. motor oil.
- Inspect and replace retaining pins if necessary.
- Keep the ball pocket and mechanism clean to avoid dirt and debris buildup.
Safety Notes:
- Never exceed the maximum rated capacity of the coupler, hitch, or vehicle.
- Always use the correct hitch ball size as indicated on the coupler body.
- Ensure the coupler and ball are properly secured before towing.
- Avoid standing under the coupler or trailer during operation.
- Replace any bent, broken, or worn parts immediately.
- Secure trailer safety chains properly before towing.
