Installation Instructions for Trailer Winches
Part Numbers:
- N142002
Tools Required:
- None specified
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Mounting the Winch:
- Ensure the winch stand supports at least five times the rated capacity of the winch.
- The mounting surface should be equal to or greater than the winch frame footprint.
- Use three (3) 3/8” diameter grade-5 bolts and torque them to 28-30 ft-lbs.
- Verify the winch is securely mounted to the structure.
Attaching the Winch Line:
- Rope:
- Weave the rope through the drum's outer wall and secure it beneath itself.
- Strap:
- Use a grade-5 bolt of the largest possible diameter for strap mounting.
- Tighten the locknut just enough to eliminate end play in the bolt. Avoid over-tightening to prevent drum deformation.
- If using a strap without a strap anchor, remove the drum bolt and install the strap before reassembling the drum.
- Torque drum locknut to 9-10 ft-lbs for single-speed winches and 24 ft-lbs for two-speed winches.
- Steel Cable:
- Pass the cable from the inside of the drum through one of the dimpled holes in the outer plate.
- Loop the cable around the drum bearing and under itself, leaving 1” of cable extending past the clamp location.
- Tighten clamp nuts to approximately 2 ft-lbs.
Operation:
- Letting Out Line/Load:
- Grip the handle firmly and disengage the ratchet pawl.
- Slowly let out the line, ensuring the ratchet pawl engages to hold the load when paused.
- Taking In Line/Load:
- Engage the ratchet pawl in the forward position.
- Turn the handle to wind the line onto the drum properly.
- Ensure the ratchet pawl holds the load when stopping.
- Using Hand Brake (if equipped):
- Apply the brake to control the load while letting out the line.
Maintenance:
- Inspect the line (rope, strap, or cable) for damage and replace if necessary.
- Apply a few drops of #30 weight engine oil to bushings and ratchet pawl pivot points.
- Maintain a thin layer of grease on the gear teeth.
Safety Notes:
- Do not exceed the maximum rated capacity stamped on the winch.
- Always maintain a minimum of three wraps of line on the drum.
- Never use the winch to move humans or as a tie-down during towing.
- Replace worn, damaged, or frayed lines immediately.
- Ensure a loud clicking sound from the ratchet when operating the winch.
Specifications:
