Installation and Usage Instructions for Trailer Winches
Part Numbers:
- N142320
Tools Required:
- None specified
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Mounting the Winch:
- The winch stand must support at least five times the rated capacity of the winch.
- Ensure the mounting surface equals or exceeds the winch frame footprint.
- Use three (3) 3/8” diameter grade-5 bolts, torqued to 28-30 ft-lbs.
- Verify the winch is securely mounted to the structure.
Attaching a Handle:
- Assemble the handle onto the input shaft end.
- Tighten the 1/2”-13 locknut against the handle and torque to 22-25 ft-lbs.
- Do not overtighten, as this may damage the components.
Attaching a Winch Line (Rope, Strap, or Cable):
- Always maintain a minimum of three complete wraps on the drum.
For a Rope:
- Weave the rope through the drum wall and secure it beneath itself.
For a Strap:
- Use a grade-5 bolt of the largest possible diameter for mounting.
- Tighten the locknut until end play in the bolt is eliminated. Avoid over-tightening to prevent drum deformation.
For a Steel Cable:
- Pass the cable from inside the drum through one of the dimpled holes.
- Loop the cable around the drum bearing and secure it under itself.
- Leave 1” of cable extending past the clamp location.
- Tighten clamp nuts to approximately 2 ft-lbs.
Operation:
-
Letting Out Line/Load:
- Firmly grip the winch handle and disengage the ratchet pawl.
- Slowly let out the line, ensuring the ratchet pawl is engaged when paused.
-
Taking In Line/Load:
- Engage the ratchet pawl in the forward/loading position.
- Turn the handle to properly wind the line onto the drum.
Maintenance:
- Inspect and replace damaged components before use.
- Apply light oil (#30 engine oil) to bushings and pivot points.
- Maintain a thin layer of grease on the gear teeth.
Safety Notes:
- Never exceed the maximum rated capacity.
- Inspect the cable, strap, or rope for wear or damage before each use.
- Ensure a loud clicking sound from the ratchet when lifting the load.
- Never release the crank handle unless the ratchet pawl is fully engaged.
- Do not operate the winch with slippery or oily hands.
- Avoid using winches to secure boats during towing; use appropriate tie-downs.
