Reese 16K 5th Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch 5th Wheel New Reese 30047 Fits Standard Rails Install Notes
Installation Instructions for 16K Fifth Wheel Hitch
Part Numbers:
- 30047
Tools Required:
- 17mm Socket
- 17mm Wrench
- Torque Wrench
- White Lithium Grease
- Marking Pencil
Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Guidelines for Matching Tow Vehicle and Trailer
- Ensure the gross trailer weight (including factory trailer weight, water tanks, and cargo) does not exceed 16,000 lbs.
- Verify the kingpin weight is between 15-25% of the gross trailer weight and does not exceed 4,000 lbs.
- Use a SAE 2-inch kingpin with your fifth wheel hitch.
- For short-bed trucks (6-8 ft.), ensure the trailer has an extended pin box and consider adding a Reese Kwik-Slide (Part # 30048) for improved turning clearance.
- Allow a minimum of 6 inches of clearance between the truck bed rails and the underside of the trailer overhang.
Step 2: Assembly Instructions
- Unpack all parts from the two cartons and verify them against the parts list.
- Place the base rails across the truck bed, aligning them as instructed in the mounting kit guide.
- Insert the legs into the base rail slots and secure them using the provided long pull pins and spring retaining clips.
- Attach the head support to the legs using 1/2-13 x 4.5-inch bolts and lock nuts. Adjust the hitch height to fit your trailer requirements (range: 13-17 inches).
- Torque all 1/2-inch bolts to 75 lb.-ft. using a torque wrench.
- Follow the separate rail mounting kit instructions to install the base rails and mounting brackets.
Step 3: Hitching Procedure
- Block the trailer wheels firmly on both sides.
- Adjust the trailer height using the jacks so that the bottom of the kingpin is 1/2 to 1 inch below the hitch skid plate.
- Rotate the handle latch away from the groove to allow the jaws to open.
- Slowly back the truck up so that the kingpin enters the hitch. The jaws will close automatically, and the handle will return to the locked position.
- Verify there is no gap between the kingpin and the hitch skid plate.
Step 4: Pull Test
- Ensure the trailer wheels remain blocked, and the trailer landing gear is resting firmly on the ground.
- Apply the trailer brakes and gently try to pull the truck forward. The trailer should remain stationary. If it moves, repeat the hitching process.
Step 5: Unhitching Procedure
- Block the trailer wheels and ensure the truck is in park with the emergency brake engaged.
- Lower the trailer landing gear until it supports the trailer weight.
- Disconnect the power cable and breakaway switch cable.
- Rotate the latch to release the kingpin and pull the handle to open the jaws fully.
- Slowly drive the truck forward to separate it from the trailer.

Safety Notes:
- WARNING: Always block the trailer wheels and ensure the landing gear is on firm ground before any procedure.
