Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Truck
- Lower and remove the spare tire for additional working space.
- Remove the passenger side exhaust heat shield for access.
- On trucks with factory trailer brake controllers (2007+):
- Relocate the electrical plug on the inside of the driver’s side frame rail using the supplied angle bracket.
Step 2: Position the Rear Mounting Rail
- Place the rear base rail into the truck bed.
- Measure the correct distance from the rear edge of the truck bed to the rear edge of the rail:
- Short Bed (5’8” or 6’6”): 26-1/4”
- Long Bed (8’0”): 28-3/16”
- Ensure the rail is centered between the truck bed weld seams.
Step 3: Mark and Drill Rear Rail Holes
- Use a center punch to mark the bolt hole locations through the rail’s pre-drilled holes.
- Drill 1/8” pilot holes at the marked positions.
- Temporarily position the rear frame brackets to confirm alignment with the pilot holes.
- Enlarge the holes to 9/16” for the carriage bolts.
- Paint any bare metal to prevent rust.
Step 4: Install Rear Frame Brackets
- Attach the rear frame brackets to the truck frame using:
- 3/4” x 2” hex bolts, 3/4” flat washers, 3/4” lock washers, and 3/4” nuts.
- Use spacer blocks as needed to fill any gaps between the bracket and the truck frame.
Step 5: Secure the Rear Base Rail
- Reposition the rear rail over the drilled holes.
- Insert 1/2”-13 x 2” carriage bolts through the rail and truck bed.
- Place U-shaped blocks into bed corrugations to prevent crushing.
- Under the truck bed, attach the carriage bolts using:
- 1/2” conical washers and 1/2”-13 hex nuts.
- Hand tighten all hardware.
Step 6: Position the Front Mounting Rail
- Insert the 5th wheel hitch, slider, or gooseneck into the rear base rail.
- Position the front rail in the truck bed by aligning the hitch tabs with the front mounting rail slots.
- Ensure the rail is centered between the truck bed weld seams.
Step 7: Mark and Drill Front Rail Holes
- Mark the bolt hole locations for the front rail using the center punch.
- Drill 1/8” pilot holes and confirm alignment with the front frame brackets.
- Enlarge the holes to 9/16”.
Step 8: Install Front Frame Brackets
- Attach the front brackets to the truck frame using the same hardware sequence as in Step 4.
Step 9: Secure the Front Base Rail
- Reposition the front rail over the drilled holes.
- Insert 1/2”-13 x 2” carriage bolts through the rail and truck bed.
- Use U-shaped blocks and spacer blocks to ensure metal-to-metal contact.
- Secure the bolts underneath with 1/2” conical washers and 1/2”-13 hex nuts.
Step 10: Final Torque of Hardware
- Starting with the base rails, torque all hardware to the following specifications:
- 1/2” Carriage Bolts: 75 ft-lbs
- 3/4” Hex Bolts: 260 ft-lbs
- Tighten all frame bracket hardware and ensure proper alignment.
Step 11: Reinstall Components
- Reattach the electrical plug using the angle bracket.
- Reinstall the exhaust heat shield and the spare tire.
Safety Notes:
- Do not install mounting rails over plastic bed liners. Cut the liner to allow for metal-to-metal contact.
- Spray-in liners are acceptable if properly cured.
- Always verify trailer-to-truck clearance at the cab and bumper before towing.
Specifications:
- Maximum Tongue Weight: 4,500 lbs (2,040 kg)
- Maximum Gross Trailer Weight: 18,000 lbs (8,160 kg)
- Compliance: SAE J-684
Warning: Double-check all bolts for proper torque before towing. Failure to do so may result in injury or damage.
