Installation Instructions for Jeep Compass (Including Rallye Package) and Jeep Patriot (Including Optional Tow Hook)

Wiring Access Location:

Tools Required:

• Wrenches: 22mm, 16mm (for optional tow hook)
• Drill Bits: 5/8" (only for reinstalling the tow hook on Patriot with optional tow hook)
• Cutting Tool: For fascia trimming on Compass Rallye and 2011+ Patriot and Compass models

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Lower Exhaust (Optional):

   • If needed, lower the exhaust by removing the rubber hanger from the hanger bracket.
   • Use lubricant or soapy water to ease removal.

2. Remove Optional Tow Hook (Patriot Only):

   • If the vehicle has an optional tow hook on the driver side, remove it.
   • To reinstall the tow hook:
     • Press/drive out existing knurled neck bolts.
     • Drill out the holes using a 5/8" drill bit.
     • Use the supplied M14 bolts to reinstall.

3. Trim Fascia:

   • For 2011+ Jeep Patriot and Compass models, fascia trimming is required:
     • Obtain vehicle owner approval before cutting.
     • Trim a 2" vertical section from the bottom lip of the fascia.
     • On Compass Rallye models, trim a 2-1/4" wide by 2" high section to allow clearance for the hitch receiver.

4. Install Hitch:

   • Place M14 hex bolts through the frame bushings from the outboard side.
   • Raise the hitch into position and push the M14 bolts through the hitch frame brackets.
   • Attach remaining hardware (washers, lock washers, and hex nuts) as shown in the instructions.

5. Reinstall Components:

   • Raise the exhaust back into position and secure with rubber hangers.

Torque Specifications:

• Tighten all M14 fasteners to 100 ft-lb (136 N*m).

Safety Notes:

• Frequently check the hitch to ensure all fasteners and the ball are securely tightened.
• If the hitch is removed, plug all holes in the trunk pan or body panels to prevent water or exhaust fumes from entering.
• Replace any damaged hitch or ball immediately.
• Observe safety precautions when working beneath a vehicle and wear eye protection.
• Do not cut access or attachment holes with a torch.

Installation Instructions for T-Connector Wiring Harness

Tools Required:

• Trim Panel Remover
• Drill (3/32” drill bit)
• 1/4" Socket
• Wire Crimpers
• Wire Cutters
• Test Light/Probe

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Disconnect Battery:

   • Disconnect and isolate the vehicle’s negative battery terminal.
   • Caution: Follow all vehicle battery safety warnings.

2. Remove Taillight Assemblies:

   • Open the tailgate.
   • Remove the two clips holding the right-side taillight assembly in place.
   • Carefully pry the housing away without breaking the alignment tabs.
   • Repeat for the left-side taillight assembly.

3. Locate Wiring Connectors:

   • On both sides (driver and passenger), locate the vehicle’s taillight wiring harness.
   • Disconnect the harness by carefully releasing the locking tabs.

4. Install T-Connector Harness:

   • Starting on the driver’s side, connect the T-Connector with the yellow wire between the vehicle connectors.
   • Repeat this step for the passenger side using the T-Connector with the green wire.

5. Route Wires:

   • Route the T-Connector with the green wire and the 4-flat connector down through the opening between the bumper and body.
   • Carefully route the green wire up through the opening on the passenger side.
   • Avoid contact with hot pipes, heat shields, the fuel tank, or any sharp edges.

6. Ground White Wire:

   • Locate a suitable grounding point near the connector, such as the vehicle's frame or cross member.
   • Do not drill into exposed or sensitive areas.
   • Clean the surface of dirt and rustproofing.
   • Drill a 3/32” hole and attach the white wire with the provided eyelet and screw.

7. Mount the T-Connector Black Box:

   • Behind the driver’s side taillight assembly, clean a flat area with a 50/50 mixture of rubbing alcohol and water.
   • Mount the black box using the double-sided tape provided.

8. Route Battery Wire:

   • Locate the red battery wire from the T-Connector black box.
   • Crimp the black 12-gauge battery wire to the red wire.
   • Route the black wire to the engine compartment following the vehicle’s frame.
   • Avoid hot pipes, heat shields, fuel tanks, or sharp edges.

9. Install the Fuse Holder:

   • Remove the fuse from the yellow fuse holder.
   • Cut the fuse holder wire, attach the ring terminal, and secure it to the vehicle’s Positive (+) battery terminal.
   • Connect the other end of the fuse holder to the black wire using the provided butt connector.

10. Reconnect Battery and Install Fuse:

    • Reconnect the vehicle’s Negative (-) battery terminal.
    • Insert the 10-amp fuse into the fuse holder.

11. Test the System:

    • Verify all connections using a test light or connect a trailer to ensure the system functions properly.

12. Secure Wires:

    • Use the provided cable ties to secure the remainder of the T-Connector harness.
    • Ensure wires are routed away from areas that could pinch, cut, or melt the wiring.

13. Reinstall Taillight Assemblies:

    • Reattach the taillight assemblies removed in Step 2.

Warnings:

• Overloading circuits can cause fires.
  • Max Stop/Turn Light: 2.1 amps per side
  • Max Taillights: 4.2 amps
• Refer to the vehicle’s owner’s manual for towing ratings and guidelines.
• Always test the installation before towing.
